City electric bills will rise to cover link

Edmonton and Calgary consumers face extra charges of 30 to 40 cents on monthly electricity bills to obtain rural consent to build a new power line proposed between the cities.The jolt to pocket books — a jump of up to 40 per cent in previously forecast costs of $1 a month for the contested project — is generated by a design that reduces disruption of country real estate.

Kyoto has ‘failed.’ Scientists call for new climate change policy

It is time for a radical rethink on climate change, says a report in the journal Nature this week.

Echoing sentiments long associated with politicians such as Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President George Bush, the report says it is time to ditch the Kyoto Protocol because the United Nations treaty has “failed.”

The Alberta public once again is being invited to information sessions on the need to build up provincial transmission systems, this time without covert eavesdropping by provincial regulators.

The Alberta Electric System Operator, which manages the province’s aging power grid, said Tuesday it will be hosting open-mike sessions in late November and early December with stakeholders along both sides of the Calgary-Edmonton corridor on the need to reinforce the system.

Canada’s electricity sector is wasting billions of dollars subsidizing consumers, a structure that inadvertently encourages carbon emissions and creates vast inefficiencies, industry leaders heard Tuesday.

“The current Canadian electricity sector is a lose-lose situation,” economist Pierre-Olivier Pineau told the annual electricity conference of the Canadian Energy Research Institute in Calgary Tuesday.

> TransAlta earnings jump 87% on boom

TransAlta Corp. saw net earnings jump 87 per cent, year-over-year, to $65.9 million during the third quarter on increased generation from its coal-fired Centralia power plant in Washington, the company reported Tuesday.

The Calgary-based firm, Canada’s largest independent power producer, said strong prices in Alberta also contributed to higher profits, despite a month-long unplanned outage at one of its Sundance generator units during peak summer demand.

Royalty bump would bruise, Taft admits

The Alberta Liberals are calling for at least 20 per cent more in provincial royalties, despite conceding the move will kill jobs and inflict some financial pain on the oilpatch.Unveiling his party’s royalties policy Tuesday in Calgary, Liberal Leader Kevin Taft urged Premier Ed Stelmach to fully adopt an expert-panel report that recommends changes to the current oil and gas regime that would generate an additional $2 billion last year — or 20 per cent more.

> MDU-Resources Group posts record profit

MDU-Resources Group Inc. has surpassed last year’s record profit in the first nine months of 2007, led by the highest earnings for a quarter in the company’s 83-year history.

The Bismarck-based energy, mining and construction company posted record earnings of $201.1 million for the third quarter this year, due in part to a $91.5 million gain from the sale of power production assets. The third-quarter earnings compared with $108.3 million for the same quarter a year ago.
