Brushy, a friend of mine did check that stream with water-testing equipment. I don't remember the levels, but they were higher than normal.

Did you get this water actually checked for its acidic properties or are you just "guessing" it was acidic? Sounds like to me that it had alot of iron in it, a naturally occuring process of natural water wells.

Valley fills, whether for disposing of strip mine overburden or for road building waste, are destructive to highland watersheds. Just the other day, I observed orange acidic water trickling in a stream below a VF due to the expansion of Rt 119 in Letcher County, KY. Surface disturbances of all kinds cause erosion and clog streams with silt.

We should not allow practices that destroy our precious watersheds, period. We all live downstream.

Brushy, They ( the EPA ) would like to propose a special designation for Appalachia only. Problem is, this would have to include all valley fills for highway and other construction also. Ms Jackson, of the EPA stated recently they would be guided by science. I ask Ms Jackson, what kind of "science" decides one fill is just that , fill and another is waste and toxic??? Oh btw I listened in on a EPA-Media conference call on this very subject a while back. The EPA spokesperson was asked by a reporter with the AP, what will happen if you (the EPA) are challenged on this issue in the supreme court. The spokesperson stated, we the EPA would lose.
