A Shift in the Debate Over Global Warming

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Most of the focus in the last few years has centered on imposing caps on greenhouse gas emissions to prod energy users to conserve or switch to nonpolluting technologies.

But now, with recent data showing an unexpected rise in global emissions and a decline in energy efficiency, a growing chorus of economists, scientists and students of energy policy are saying that whatever benefits the cap approach yields, it will be too little and come too late.

Tories reject opposition pledge on global warming

OTTAWA – The Harper government has rejected a new pledge taken by opposition leaders to endorse a tough international treaty to fight global warming.

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion, the Bloc Quebecois’ Gilles Duceppe and the NDP’s Jack Layton all signed the pledge to push for a post-Kyoto Protocol climate change agreement that would prevent average global temperatures from rising by more than two degrees Celsius above 19th-century levels “because scientists have shown that, otherwise, the consequences of global warming are likely to be catastrophic.”

Hotter and Drier: The West’s Changed Climate

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Human activities are already changing the climate of the American West. This report by the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization (RMCO) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), drawn from 50 scientific studies, 125 other government and scientific sources, and our own new analyses, documents that the West is being affected more by a changed climate than any other part of the United States outside of Alaska. When compared to the 20th century average, the West has experienced an increase in average temperature during the last five years that is 70 percent greater than the world as a whole. Responding quickly at all levels of government by embracing the solutions that are available is critical to minimizing further disruption of this region’s climate and economy.

What the Government Doesn’t Want You To Know About Global Warming

JUAN GONZALEZ: Dr. James Hansen is widely regarded as the leading climate change scientist in the country. It was his testimony to a Senate committee in 1988 that first brought the threat of global warming to the world’s attention. For the past quarter of a century he has headed the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, NASA’s premiere climate research center.

Just over a year ago, Dr. Hansen went public with a charge that made headlines around the world, that the Bush administration had been trying to silence his warnings about the urgent need to address climate change.

Insecure About Climate Change

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, Americans witnessed what looked like an overseas humanitarian-relief operation. The storm destroyed much of the city, causing more than $80 billion in damage, killing more than 1,800 people, and displacing in excess of 270,000. The country suddenly had to divert its attention and military resources to respond to a domestic emergency. While scientists do not attribute single events to global warming, the storm gave Americans a visual image of what climate change — which scientists believe will likely exacerbate the severity and number of extreme weather events — might mean for the future.

Global warming causes quakes, early spring

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Those skeptics who think enviros and climate change scientists and certain politicians like to blame everything on global warming will enjoy this one: Global warming causes earthquakes.

No, climate change doesn’t affect plate tectonics, that would be silly. But it does cause the melting of ice sheets, which scientists think could release stored up energy that triggers quakes.

US Lieberman: Religious activism helps global warming legislation

AIRFIELD, Conn. – Religious activism is helping to generate support for legislation aimed at dealing with global warming, U.S. Sen. Je Lieberman told college students Friday.

Evangelical Christians, traditionally associated with conservative issues, are supporting efforts to deal with global warming, Lieberman said during an appearance at Fairfield University. He also noted that the Catholic Church this week listed pollution as one of the new areas of sinful behavior.

No region untouched by climate change, study shows

TTAWA — Climate change is already affecting every region of Canada, according to a major new federal government study that cites specific local examples of the good and bad in a warming nation.A common theme throughout the report is the many ripple effects to come from increasing water scarcities. Hydro power will be harder to come by, while Canada’s thirsty neighbours to the south are expected to intensify political pressure for access to northern taps.

Can Global Warming Be Slowed by Complex Concept of Carbon Trading?

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Environmental critics of a cap-and-trade system worry carbon traders, like other derivatives traders, will get carried away and game the system to produce excessive profits for themselves. But the biggest issue as the US contemplates its first national climate bill is the how to allocate the emissions under the cap.
